The road to Nosara

This is a short post because I thought our lives would be shortened on our way to the hotel in Nosara Saturday night. That isn’t criticism of Kim’s driving our mighty 2WD vehicle, either. She is a solid driver and a fearless woman. My only fear was that she would lose control of our car when lightning struck. Each time we saw lightning, which was often, it was a strong, fierce bolt. Kim would involuntarily let go of the steering wheel. We were fine, and I know she would have grabbed the wheel if something started to go wrong. It was an emotionally draining trip, to say the least.

It’s raining a little

The rain was so hard and daylight was fading fast. Locals constantly passed us as we picked our way gingerly along pot holes that were full of rainwater. Not knowing how deep these holes were was a dangerous mystery. Some of them stretched halfway across the road! The good thing about being passed was that it gave us the chance to see how those drivers negotiated the roads. We could also see how deep the water was as their dirt bike tires churned through the many mini-lakes on the road.

Here’s a picture of a rather large wash-out ahead of us. We paused for a few minutes to let other cars go so we could learn from them.

We would ford one section of the road, feeling like we accomplished something! Then we would roll another 100 yards or so and see more brake lights, more cars picking their way through more water. We would stop, turn our hazard lights on, and sit as close to the side of the road as we dared, waiting to see how other cars got through the next puddles.  This process added another hour and a half to our drive from the airport to the hotel in Nosara but eventually we made it there, safe, sound and a little muddy.

Roadtrips are totally my thing! I love doing them once in a while. However, rains and thunderstorms do bring out a defensive side but I guess I love taking precautions in such weather! Thanks for sharing your experience.

This was certainly frightening! And it was amazing what a difference there was in the road and scenery when it wasn’t raining! It was like it wasn’t even the same road!
