You’ll learn that we love beer. And pizza and nachos. And a lot of other things that aren’t so healthy for us. We also love to make wise food decisions too, but you won’t read about that in this blog. We were in Ogunquit, ME, for another massage-a-palooza a few weekends ago. On our way out of town, thought we’d get a bite to eat.
Pizza vs. nachos
Our original thought was to go to Cornerstone for some wood-fired pizza and draft beer. We were across the street from Cornerstone, about to cross (in the crosswalk, after stopping, making eye contact with the irritated drivers and waving politely) when a nice hostess from Rose Cove said, “Would you like to try some fudge?”
The answer to this question is always yes.
Rose Cove has a store inside where you can buy fudge. We were intrigued, enticed and tempted! We chewed our delicious samples and checked their menu that hung outside. Our eyes settled on nachos simultaneously. We new Cornerstone had a wider selection of beer, but the sun was shining, the birds were singing, and nachos sounded delicious. After running across the street to make sure Cornerstone didn’t have nachos, we came back and got a table on the front deck.
And there’s fudge
The seating arrangements are a little tight. We were seated at one of Rose Cove’s fire pit tables, which I bet would be awesome at night or on a chilly day. I sat with my elbows on the table – I know, no manners – I had to move my right arm to let a couple pass by on their way to their table. I don’t think my arms are especially huge, although I have been spending 20 minutes a day with Jillian Michaels. Getting ripped! So about those nachos…
We ordered bottled beer. I got a Michelob Ultra so I could feel good about loading up on cheesy tortilla chips and Kim ordered a Corona Light so she could put a lime in her beer and also feel good about loading up on cheesy tortilla chips. And you know what else was loaded up with cheesy tortilla chips? Our plate of nachos. This appetizer is a meal for four people. We had a mountain of chips and about four pounds of cheese. I am not exaggerating . These nachos were layered perfectly. Our only complaint was that we couldn’t extract any from the serving plate without sacrificing some morsel.
Fudge is heavy. Ice cream fits in your stomach easier.
We ate and drank and people-watched until we were stuffed. We had finished about half of the nachos. Remember I said earlier that we don’t always make wise food decisions? The fudge’s role was complete; it got us in the door. However, it’s summertime, which means it’s ice cream season. (Actually, we love ice cream in the winter too, when it’s cold and snowy outside and we’re warm inside. And we love it in the spring, when the trees are just starting to blossom and we can celebrate this new life with a bowl of ice cream. Fall is a great time for ice cream, especially when it accompanies homemade apple crisp.)
Linda at the Beauport Inn had recommended Big Daddy’s on Route 1. Kim loves Grape Nut ice cream but it’s hard to find. Linda checked Big Daddy’s menu online and found that they had it. They also have soft serve, which is my favorite.
By the time the unforgiving Route 1 traffic let us creep out of congested Ogunquit and Wells, our nachos had settled and we thought we had enough room for ice cream. We were right! Kim ended up getting some concoction with toffee bits and was completely satisfied. I ordered soft serve, as I always do when it’s an option. Both cones were huge, even though we ordered smalls.
We meandered up Route 1 a little longer on our way home, leisurely eating our ice cream cones with happy heads and hearts.
What about a photo of the fudge!? Don’t let us sweet tooters wonder 🙂
Seriously though, that nachos looks out of this world. I would rather eat share that as a main course rather than an appetiser, it looks big enough to me!
It is totally big enough! We did not even finish it and it was the only thing we ordered! It was sooooooo good!
